Discover the Rewards of BEING A BARTLEYAN

Clean Up Bartley Experience!

Every end of the Semester, Bartley teachers and students have been rolling up their sleeves to ensure that the common spaces are well maintained before the school closes for the term. CUBE has been a tradition for Bartleyans as they display their 'gotong-royong' spirit. This has indeed been very beneficial for students as they are imbued with a sense of ownership for BSS.

Through the (Terrarium) Looking  Glass

Since Day 0 of the merging of First Toa Payoh Secondary School with Bartley Secondary School, the staff of BSS have been actively bonding with one another through many activities and one of them is a Terrarium session. The session indeed requires great concentration and teamwork to create a terrairum that has been proven to provide a calming effect on the owner!

03

July: A Month of Harmony

BSS's National Education unit organised an NE-week at the start of the term to promote Harmony week in the lead up to Racial Harmony Day (RHD) that was held on the 21st of July 2016. The RHD celebrations was also commemorated in conjunction with Hari Raya celebrations.

The peak of the celebration saw staff and students alike dressing up in ethnic attire to heighten the celebratory atmosphere.

A book is a device to ignite the imagination.–Alan Bennett

The English department has been keeping us alive (in our imaginations!) every Tuesday with various innovative ways in presenting a'reading'.

In one week, it could be a modern 'wayang kulit' and in another it could be a theme on Movies.

Apart from making reading alive, teachers and fellow students  have been actively incorporating the use of quiz applications and QR Codes that lead us to another reading apart from just articles on papers. Indeed, these sessions present a borderless reading experience for the students.

Soccer 'C' Boys won 3rd place!

The Singapore Youth Olympic Games 2016 organised by the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF) ran from  17 June to 17 July. The 4th Singapore Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF) acts as a platform for youths to showcase their sporting talents. The SYOF is a legacy of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) held in Singapore in 2010 and subsequently in Nanjing, China.

Thus, it is indeed a great honour for our 'C' division boys to have emerged 3rd in the Games. The boys have certainly been training very hard throughput the weeks leading up to the games. Congratulations, Boys!

"AYUH BERCERITA!"

"The world is shaped by two things — stories told and the memories they leave behind." This quote by Vera Nazarian captures the essence of the storytelling session conducted by our very own Bartley students. A collaboration between Bartley Secondary School's Malay Department and Tampines Regional Library, 'Ayuh Bercerita!' (Let's tell a Story) gives an opportunity for our students to embark on a storytelling journey to ignite the active imagination of their young audience. It was a wonderful learning experience for our Bartleyans. The audience's active participation in the follow-up activity attests to our students' ability to capture their attention. Here's to more storytelling sessions!

All The World's a Stage

The lower secondary Malay Language students participated in a drama competition - Pertandingan Drama Teater Pelajar - that was organised by the People's Association.

The students qualified for the finals of the competition with their performance titled, 'Nila Setitik (A Drop of Indigo)'.

The experience has certainly built their confidence and the students learned how to effectively express themselves through dialogue and body language.

Piloxing is definitely the NEW Zumba

What do you get when you combine the power of Pilates with the cardio benefits of boxing? An intense, calorie-burning new aerobics workout program that is developing a diehard following! Fitness enthusiasts are discovering the body sculpting benefits and the head-to-toe, knockout results that come from Piloxing.

BSS's Physical Education department organised a mass piloxing session as part of the ActiveSG month. Staff and graduating students immersed themselves in the pulsating beat of the bass, moving and pumping their way to generate great strength and agility in the 1.5 hour session.

Piloxing is a fun new inter-disciplinary program that’s a great way to stay in shape and feel empowered. The moves are performed in sync with a pumping music track at 145 beats per minute.  What’s more, you’re guaranteed to burn between 900 and 1,000 calories every session.

Kembara (Journey to) Brunei

"Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." - André Gide.
The exams may be over but learning doesn't stop. Our Sec 3 Malay students went to Brunei Darussalam, immersing in the rich history and culture of the country.

Their learning does not end in Brunei. Once back home, students got together in school to participate in a meaningful closure to their trip.

Making Waves at Waterway

As part of the  time-honoured tradition of Tree Planting Day, Bartley Secondary School's Councillors rowed kayaks for half an hour, looking for litter on the water surface of the reservoir.

Before setting off, they were given a quick lesson on why throwing trash into water bodies is harmful.

Two groups came in 2nd and 5th as part of the Waterway Cleanup Challenge.
